The quake-hit regions of Turkey and neighbouring Syria were again devastated with three major earthquakes striking on Monday. These were measured of 7.8, 7.6 and 6.0 on the ricter scale.
As per Turkey’s disaster management agency, the country has lost 6,234 lives due to the earthquakes, and more bodies continue to be recovered.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared state of emergency in 10 provinces and said that at least 13 million people have been affected. aking statements on the Kahramanmaraş-epicentered earthquakes at the State Information Coordination Center, President Erdoğan said: “We declare the 10 provinces hit by earthquakes to be an area of disaster affecting the public life. By the power vested in us by Article 119 of the Constitution, we have decided to declare state of emergency in order for search and rescue operations and the following efforts to be carried out rapidly. We will quickly complete the Presidency and National Assembly processes regarding this decision, which is to cover the 10 provinces and remain in effect for a period of three months.”
