Easing rules out of lockdown in India, the way forward: How other countries have fared

According to the WHO report, the total number of corona virus patients across the world rose to 55,93,631 with 1,04,505 new cases in the last 24 hours while the death toll stands at 3,53,334.

The governments of all the affected countries have already imposed many restrictions in order to control the situation. But since the US, Europe and China have already lifted their lockdown, countries like Brazil, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Russia and South Africa have taken contentious decisions to start a return to normal lives despite a steep rise in cases.

This is being planned in order to address the situation of unemployment, poverty and down-sliding economy.

After 8 weeks of Lockdown in India, nearly 140 million workers and self employed people have lost their income source while the confirmed Covid-19 cases has overtaken that of China. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in his address to the nation,” Corona virus will remain a part of our lives for a long time but at the same time, we cannot allow our lives to be confined only around corona”.

As a result, the government removed restrictions on domestic flights, closing of shops in non-containment zones and trains.

The Indonesian government is planning to reopen South East Asia’s largest economy either by late July or early August in large part.

Mexico’s president Andrés Manuel López unveiled a traffic lights system for a gradual return to a “new normal” from June 1. He also resumed auto companies.

Brazilian President Hair Bolsonaro signed a decree labelling beauty salons, gyms and barber shops as “essential services” that should reopen.

Russian President Vladimir Putin relaxed curbs on oil prices. Earlier, as hundreds of thousands of people returned to work for the first time in more than a month, Russia overtook Spain and the UK to become world’s second most affected country in the world.

Many experts have opposed this decision of the countries to remove lockdown. In a report of Financial times KK Cheng, a professor of public health at UK’s University of Birmingham said,” Governments have to balance health, wealth, and public acceptance but if you open up too early, your livelihoods will be gone, health service will overrun and there will be no economic activities”.

In the same report Jimmy Whitworth , a professor of international public health at the London school of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine said,” it’s going to be quite hard to have a national regime that will suit everyone”.
