The Supreme Court of India stopped the much-publicised demolition drive in Delhi Jehangirpuri, days after communal violence affected the area. The drive was being carried out by New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC).
Violence between two communities erupted on Saturday when a Hanuman Jayanti procession crossed a mosque in the area. At least nine people, including eight cops were injured in the riots.
The drive, being discussed widely on news channels, came following a letter to NDMC, written by Delhi BJP chief Adesh Gupta. In the letter, Gupta urged the mayor to demolish “illegal constructions belonging to the rioters in Jahangirpuri”.
