Expect more rains this year in June, July

India is expected to receive more rainfall than normal during the period between June and September, Secretary of the ministry of Earth sciences Dr. M Ravichandran has said in a press briefing.

Dr. Ravichandran said on Monday that the forecast suggests above normal rainfall is likely over most part of the country. Only a few regions in Northwest, East and Northeast India are likely to receive below normal rainfall during the period.

Quantitatively, the seasonal rainfall over the country as a whole is likely to be 106% of long period average. Currently, moderate El Niño conditions are prevailing over the equatorial Pacific region and climate model forecasts indicate neutral condition by the beginning of monsoon season and La Niña conditions during second half of monsoon season, the Long Range Forecast by Indian Metereological Department said.

It added that the snow cover on Northern hemisphere extent was below normal between January 2024 to March 2024. Winter and spring snow cover extent over Northern Hemisphere as well as Eurasia has a generally inverse relationship with the subsequent monsoon season rainfall.
