Bihar, Assam floods: Millions rendered homeless as the states fight the monsoon onslaught

The monsoon triggered floods in Bihar’s Darbhanga area once again as Kamala and Kosi river submerged nearby areas, affecting at least 55,000 people. While many have been shifted to relief centres and camps, thousands of lives continue to be at stake, in danger and at the mercy of nature’s fury that Kosi becomes in monsoons. No casualties have been reported in the state yet.

Former chief minister of Bihar and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav and a few other opposition leaders in the state have been sharing images of people affected by the floods in Bihar. A doctor’s hardships, as he uses a cart to reach a COVID-care-center flooded has found its way onto the timelines of many of these leaders.

A video tweeted by Times of India shows a part of a school building collapsing as Koshi river is flooded in the Naugachhia area of Bhagalpur district after heavy rains.

According to Darbhanga’s district administration, the Additional District Magistrate (ADM) Nadeemul Ghaffar Siddiqui inspected the flood-affected areas along with the Circle Officer Triveni Prasad Dwivedi and Block Development Officer Ashok Kumar Chaudhary of the Kusheshwar East Block. Nadeemul told ANI, “Instructions have been given to provide more government boats free of charge to all those affected by the floods. We went to the villages and filed a report. So far, plastic sheets have been given to people and the process of providing other relief material is also underway.”

The metereological department said that the state is likely to face thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds till July 19, 2020 and also receive heavy rains  over the weekend.

Meanwhile, Assam is also fighting the onslaught of floods and Khumtai’s BJP MLA Mrinal Saikia has been sharing videos of the scary conditions in his constituency. At least 4 million people have been affected by floods in Assam while the death toll in the state stands at 71.  Around 3,218 villages across 27 districts in Assam continue to be affected by the floods, Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said.

According to officials, at least 51 wild animals died after the parts of Kaziranga National Park were submerged on Tuesday. Some tigers and rhinoceros strayed into neighboring villages to escape inundating while the state has rescued over 102 animals. Nearly 100 boats have been deployed across the state in the past few days and 480 relief camps have been set up across 20 districts offering shelter to more than 60,000 affected people.
