Monsoon session day 9: Govt says more than a crore migrants returned to villages on foot during lockdown

In a remarkable revelation, the government said that the number of migrants who returned to their native villages during the pandemic-induced lockdown in March this year on foot, was more than one crore.

“COVID-19 has resulted in the migration of a large number of workers from destination states to the home-states,” Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways V K Singh said in the house in a written response.

Lok Sabha passed the following five bills:

Jammu and Kashmir Official Languages Bill, 2020
Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code, 2020
Industrial Relations Code 2020
Code on Social Security Bill, 2020.
The Banking Regulation (Amendment) Bill, 2020,

Rajya Sabha also passed seven key bills. A lot of chaos also ensued amid all the proceedings as the eight MPs suspended a day before, due to their unruly behaviour, continued to stage dharna.

Rajya Sabha deputy chairman Harivansh even tried to pacify them as he met and offered them tea but they refused. The chairman announced that he’d observe one-day fast against the unruly behaviour with him by these MPs. In a letter to vice president Venkaiah Naidu, who is also the chairperson of the Upper House, he said he was ‘unable to sleep’ for two nights due to Sunday’s unprecedented chaos in the House.
