Farmers protest with chakka jaam: Rakesh Tikait gives govt ‘time till Oct 2 for repealing of laws’

Farmer leader Rakesh Tikait has said the farmers “give time to the government till October 2” to repeal the three farm laws they have been protesting against. Mr Tikait was speaking at a gathering during the chakka jaam call on Saturday in support of the protest farmers in Delhi.

“We have given time to the government till 2nd October to repeal the laws. After this, we will do further planning. We won’t hold discussions with the government under pressure,” the Bharatiya Kisan Union leader told reporters.

Roads across several states, including Punjab and Haryana are blocked and several political factions have extended their support to the chakka jam call of farmers. Farmers have been protesting against three farm laws for more than two months now.

Joint Police Commissioner of Delhi Narendra Singh Bundela told reporters that over “60 protesters have been detained from Shahidi Park”. The central government had deployed 50,000 Delhi Police personnel, Paramilitary & Reserve Forces in Delhi-NCR to avoid any untoward incident in the chakka jaam. The farmers had agreed to not block roads in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Uttrakhand, in wake of the Republic Day violence.

Meanwhile entry/exit gates of Vishwavidyalaya, Khan Market, Nehru Place, Lal Quila, Jama Masjid, Janpath, Central Secretariat, Mandi House, ITO and Delhi Gate were closed Saturday morning, in wake of the protests. The exchange facilities continued to be available at these stations.
