India successfully test-fired Rudram 1, the New Generation Anti-Radiation Missile (NGRAM) at the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Balasore, Odisha at 10.30 am on Friday. Rudram-1 is the first indigenous tactical anti-missile developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) with a speed of Mach 0.6 to 2, which is twice the speed of sound. The range of Rudram-1 lies from 100 to 200 km considering the altitude from which it is fired.
According to officials, the missile is expected to integrate with the Sukhoi fighter jets of the India Air Force after it gets ready for induction. India successfully launched the aerial version of BrahMos missile from a Su-30 MKI fighter aircraft in May last year.
The Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO on the successful launch of the missile. He tweeted, “The New Generation Anti-Radiation Missile (Rudram-1) which is India’s first indigenous anti-radiation missile developed by DRDO for Indian Air Force was tested successfully today at ITR, Balasore. Congratulations to DRDO & other stakeholders for this remarkable achievement.”
According to the press release by Defence Ministry, the missile has INS-GPS navigation with Passive Homing Head for the final attack. The New Generation Anti-Radiation Missile (RUDRAM) hit the radiation target with pin-point accuracy. This missile is a potent weapon for Indian Air Force (IAF) for Suppression of Enemy Air Defence (SEAD) effectively from large stand-off ranges.
A senior government official called this successful testing a huge step forward. “The IAF will now have the capability to perform SEAD (Suppression of Enemy Air Defence) operations deep into enemy territory to destroy enemy air defence setup,” he said.
Dr. Mahesh Sharma, the former Union Minister, called it a massive step towards the making of Aatma Nirbhar Bharat in Defence Sector. Rakesh Singh, MP also tweeted “Many Congratulations to @DRDO_India, DRDO on a roll with back to back launches & techonological validations, A New Generation Anti Radiation Missile #RudraM-I successfully flight tested for @IAF_MCC. Hon. PM Shri @narendramodi Ji’s mantra of #AatmaNirbharBharar is reaching skies.”
