Govt offers to hold the farm laws, SC shifts decision to Delhi Police over farmers’ tractor rally

The central government has offered to stay the farm laws for 1.5 years, in the tenth round of meeting between the government and farmer unions’ representatives. The development comes on the heels of the Supreme Court putting a stay on the laws that the farmers have been protesting against.

Farmer representatives have not accepted the proposal yet, but have promised hold internal consultations first and then meet for the eleventh round of meeting scheduled for January 22, Friday.

“During discussions, we said that govt is ready to put on hold the farm laws for one or one-and-a-half years. I’m happy that farmer unions have taken this very seriously and said they would consider it tomorrow and convey their decision on January 22,” agriculture minister Narendra Singh Tomar told reporters after the meeting.

Meanwhile, the SC also shifted the responsibility of allowing the tractor rally on Republic Day, January 26, in Delhi. “We’ve said that it is for the police to decide. We are not going to pass the orders. You are the authority to take action,” Chief Justice of India SA Bobde told the Centre.
