Farmers’ protest completes a month: Is Haryana govt headed for a BJP-JJP split?

Led by Kisan Mazdoor Morcha and Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political), the rail roko call by farmers managed to get at least 9 trains cancelled in Ambala region while several others trains got delayed in Punjab and Haryana. Tuesday marks day of the farmers’ protest that began last month.

A few farmers’ organizations have been staging dharna and making calls to march to Delhi to press for their demands regarding the central government agricultural policies and newly-implemented laws.

Apart from seeking a legislation for MSP and implementation of the Swaminathan Commission recommendations, the groups have also demanded justice for victims of Lakhimpur Kheri incident which happened in 2021.

Meanwhile, media reports have claimed that Dushyant Chautala’s Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) may end its alliance with BJP. An India Today report said that cabinet ministers as well as chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar may resign by the day end. The reports took shape when independant MLA Nayan Pal Rawat said that he has expressed his support to Khattar’s government after getting an impression that the JJP-BJP alliance may be in danger.

TV reports suggest that a disagreement over seat-sharing for the upcoming general elections may be the reason behind the possible split. They also claimed that Arjun Munda and Tarun Chugh will attend the BJP legislative meeting in Chandigarh Tuesday afternoon and Chautala was likely to meet union home minister Amit Shah Tuesday morning but the meeting did not take place.

Currently, BJP holds maximum number of seats (41 MLAs) in Haryana’s 90-member assembly while Congress has 30 MLAs and JJP holds 10. The Haryana Lokhit Party (HLP) and the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) have one MLA each in the assembly which also has seven independent MLAs.
