Cyclone Burevi to hit Tamil Nadu, Kerala coasts on Dec 4, IMD warns fishermen against venturing out

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued warning that Cyclonic storm Burevi has formed in the Bay of Bengal. The IMD statement for Tamil Nadu and Kerala said Wednesday afternoon, “Burevi over SW BoB to cross Sri Lanka coast on 2nd evening/night. To emerge into Gulf of Mannar on 3rd .To cross S TN coast between Pamban and Kanniyakumari during 3rd night and 4th early morning as CS.”

IMD urged fishermen to not venture in the Bay of Bengal. “Fishermen are advised not to venture into southwest Bay of Bengal and along & off east Sri Lanka coast from 2nd to 3rd December; Comorin Area, Gulf of Mannar. and south Tamilnadu-Kerala and west Sri Lanka coasts from 2nd to 4th December, over Lakshadweep-Maldives area & adjoining southeast Arabian Sea from 3rd to 5th December. Total suspension of fishing operation during 2nd to 5th December over the areas.”

Burevi is the second cyclone formed in the southwest region of the Bay of Bengal over past one week and the third one to be formed in the North Indian Ocean region.

Earlier, the Met department’s special bulletin said, “The cyclone is located 400kms east-southeast of Trincomalee in Sri Lanka and 800kms east-southeast of Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu. It will intensify within the next 12 hours, crossing near Trincomalee during evening or night Wednesday.”
