Covid 19 fourth wave hits Middle East, WHO says those not vaccinated affected worse

With just little over five percent of the population having been vaccinated, Middle eastern countries seem to facing the worst of covid 19 cases. There has been a surge in the daily cases in Iran, Iraq, Tunisia, and Libya and the delta variant has triggered a fourth wave of the pandemic, a World Health Organization (WHO) report said.

“The rapid spread of the Delta variant across the Eastern Mediterranean Region and all other WHO regions is a major cause for concern. We are now in the fourth wave of Covid-19 across the region,” WHO regional director for the eastern Mediterranean Dr Ahmed Al-Mandhari said.

Those not vaccinated form major part of those being infected in the latest wave of coronavirus in the Middle East. The WHO statement said, “Over 310 000 new cases and 3500 deaths have been reported on average on a weekly basis during the last 4 weeks, which is a 55% and 15% increase in the number of cases and deaths, respectively, compared to the previous month.”
