Japan announces emergency till May 11 in wake of new surge in viral cases

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga has declared a new state of emergency running from April 25 to May 11 in Tokyo, Osaka and two other prefectures of the country. This will be the third time that some of the toughest measures will be implemented in Japan to control a surge in virus cases.

The Japanese PM told reporters, “Despite the emergency being short-term, it asks restaurants to close and requests in-depth cooperation — for which I sincerely apologize. The number of infections has surged since last month, with variant cases also rising. A high level of vigilance is needed, or infections could spread nationwide.”

In wake of the developments, author Kazuki Shimizu of the London School of Economics wrote, “Plans to hold the Olympic and Paralympic games this summer must be reconsidered as a matter of urgency.”

“Holding Tokyo 2020 for domestic political and economic purposes–ignoring scientific and moral imperatives–is contradictory to Japan’s commitment to global health and human security.”
