Rakesh Tikait seeks US support ahead of Modi-Biden meet

Farmer leader Rakesh Tikait brought a new twist to the farmer-government negotiations over the recent farm laws after he sought support from the US in his protest against the central government in India. Just hours before Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was set to meet US President Joe Biden, Tikait tweeted and appealed to US president Joe Biden seeking his intervention.

Tikait’s tweet read as, “These black laws should be repealed to save us. Please focus on our concern while meeting PM Modi,” Tikait, the leader of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Indian farmers’ union) and a key face of the agitation.”

Thousands of farmers have been campaigning against three laws brought into force in September 2020. While the central government claims the legislative changes will be in favour of the farmers, farmers fear it may be the opposite. Protesting farmers have said that the new laws will leave them at the mercy of big corporations who will dictate prices and wean them off state support.
