Jharkhand govt rolls back decision to include Bhojpuri, Magahi languages in Dhanbad and Bokaro

After days of protests across the state, the Jharkhand government has rolled back the previous decision to include Bhojpuri and Magahi as regional languages in Dhanbad and Bokaro. Protestors claimed it was an infringement on the rights of the local adivasis.

The state government had identified regional languages in a notification issued in December and it included Bhojpuri and Magahi as well. These two languages are primarily spoken in Jharkhand’s parent state, Bihar.

The new notification has stated that after consideration on the earlier notification, the government has identified district-wise regional languages. The fresh notification Nagpuri, Urdu, Khortha, Kurmali and Bangla are mentioned as the regional languages and Bhojpuri and Magahi have been removed from the list.
