Dozens of corpses found floating in rivers in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh amid covid 19

Even as the country faces the worst medical crisis in history, the dead, too, seem to be facing the brunt. Dozens of dead bodies were first found floating in Ganga river in Bihar. Now, similar incidences have been reported from Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh as well.

A News18 report claimed on Wednesday morning that several bodies were found floating in Runj river in the Panna district of Madhya Pradesh. It added that Panna collector Sanjay Mishra confirmed the same, claiming that the bodies of two patients were put in the river by locals as part of rituals.

Earlier this week, at least 71 bodies were recovered from Ganga and buried, Buxar district official had informed reporters.

After the news stirred widespread criticism of the state government for a lack of proper arrangement during the deadly pandemic, Bihar government issued a statement on Tuesday.

Minister of water resources Sanjay Kumar Jha said, “The Bihar Government is seized of the matter of unfortunate case of floating mortal remains in river Ganga, near Chausa village in Buxar district. The bodies have floated into Bihar from UP. Upon postmortem, our doctors have confirmed that these are 4-5 days’ old bodies.

Hon CM Shri Nitish Kumar is pained at both the tragedy as well as harm to the river Ganges. He has always been particular about the purity and uninterrupted flow of the river and has asked administration to intensify patrolling to ensure this is not repeated.

He added, “Last rites of 71 bodies performed as per protocols. A net has been placed in Ganges in Ranighat, bordering UP & Bihar. We’ve advised UP administration to be vigilant; our district admin is keeping vigil too. Advise all to give all respect to those dead, and Maa Ganges.”
