Cyclone Tauktae: 12 killed as storm hits Maharashtra, Gujarat

Cyclone Tauktae has killed at least 12 people and affected around 15000 others in Gujarat and hit Mumbai coasts on Monday. Ports and the main airport in Gujarat were all closed as a precautionary measure.

Revenue secretary Pankaj Kumar told news agency Reuters, “This will be the most severe cyclone to hit Gujarat in at least 20 years. This can be compared with the 1998 cyclone that hit Kandla and inflicted heavy damage.” The 1998 cyclone left at least 4,000 people dead in Gujarat.

Coastal states of Kerala, Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra have also witnessed destruction due to the cyclonic storm.
