AAP MLA Sarita Singh has said that women are not the weaker gender but are made to believe so through years of social and family conditioning. Ms Singh was speaking during a panel discussion held in Delhi by The Crazy Tales.
She said, “I belong to Purvanchal. In our regions, the birth of a son is welcomed with dhol but no such festivities are held when daughters are born. Right from the birth we are telling our women that you are not empowered, you are dependent.”
“That is how our socialization works. I think 90 percent of the women sitting here would have heard at their home ‘you need to go to someones house, this is not your home’. ‘He is your brother, he can do it, but you can;t because you are a girl’. So the first thing that women like us must do. Whether we are in a government job, a private job or are running your business, we should empower women around us. There’d people who listen to us, we must tell them that women are not weak, we are not weak.”
She championed the spirit of empowering oneself and not waiting for someone to help.
